Commercial and health issues discovered in ethnic seafood products in Italy

A recent study has shown that ethnic seafood products sold on the Italian market have both commercial and health issues. A total of 68 samples were taken and analysed using by sequencing a full cytochrome c oxidase (COI) DNA barcode (FDP, ~655bp) or a mini COI DNA barcode (MDP, ~139bp) using universal primers. The resulting barcodes were compared with sequences on BOLD and GenBank. Comparisons between molecular and label analysis showed that 48.5% of products had discrepancies and 2 products tested were associated with health issues  due to the presence of toxic fish.
